Thessaly
Thessaly: Annexed in 1881. Contains extensive fertile plains surrounded by mountains where much of Greece's wheat is grown. The music and dance is similar to Roumeli with a heavy influence from Epirus especially in the west. The dances of the Karagounides, the present western plainsmen and farmers of Thessaly, are characterized by a steady, pulsating rhythm. Thessaly retains a strong tradition of song-dances where the dancers sing the music, often without instrumental accompaniment. The Pileion peninsula extending out from Volos is mostly influenced by the Aegean culture, e.g. preference for island style syrta. There are large numbers of formerly nomadic Vlachs and Sarakatsans in Thessaly.
