Epirus

Epirus: Also formally united with Greece in 1913. The northwest corner of Greece, bordering Albania. Greek Epirus is especially rich in folk music. It is rugged and mountainous except immediately around the main cities of Ioannina and Arta. A unique characteristic of the region is the polyphonic singing wherein a droning voice sings bass against the melodic line. As an ethnographic region, Epirus extends into southern Albania with the concurrent similarities in music and dance. Epirot music and dance tend to be slow, rhapsodic and soulful.
